CCECC starts $600m rail link in Djibouti

30 September 2013

China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation has begun the construction of a $600m rail project linking Djibouti to South Sudan.

The project, which is expected to be completed in two years, is being financed by the China EXIM Bank.

Once complete it is hoped that the rail project would facilitate business activities and improve revenue for countries in the East African region, the Djibouti Government said.

Djibouti’s transport minister, Moussa Ahmed, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the railway line "will facilitate access to different markets in the region and will also link Djibouti to South Sudan through Ethiopia."

A similar project, also built by CCECC, linking Addis Ababa with Djibouti is also underway and is expected to be finished in the next two years.
