American equipment maker Caterpillar has partnered with automotive technology company Luminar to integrate light detection and ranging technology (Lidar) into its autonomous fleet.

The sensing system will be used with the company’s Command remote control technology to improve productivity and safety by boosting 3D modelling, site mapping and the tracking of progress.

Austin Russell, Luminar’s chief executive, said: “This partnership with Caterpillar has the opportunity to be a spearhead for next industrial revolution of automation.

“Now that Luminar has been successfully executed for automotive series production, we’re able to branch out to adjacent markets with a shared mission.”

Lidar uses a pulsed laser to scan its surroundings, measuring the size and shape of nearby objects.

In 2020, Caterpillar purchased a stake in Californian firm Marble Robot.
