Cairo to get sunken football stadium to avoid planes

Californian architect Gensler has teamed up with UK consulting engineer Buro Happold to design a 45,000-seat stadium for the Al-Ahly Football Club in Cairo.

The stadium is on the approach to the airport and so has to keep its head down. The design does this by partially submerging its bowl – which also reduces ambient heat.

The ground will have a Wembley-style arch to support the roof and double-tiered stands on three sides to bring spectators closer to matches. A 30,000-capacity overflow plaza will contain shops, a museum and cafes.

Tayomara Gama, Gensler’s sports lead in Europe, said: “By overcoming site challenges and integrating sustainable, cutting-edge solutions, our design aims to create a landmark venue that embodies the spirit of the club and acts as a cultural and economic catalyst for the region, leaving a lasting impact both in Egypt and beyond.”

The stadium will be a focal point for the Al-Ahly Club Sports City, which will also include a university, hospital and mosque.
