Bam Infra Nederland has converted an asphalt spreading paving machine so it runs on hydrogen instead of diesel.

It says it’s the first hydrogen-fuelled machine in the Dutch construction industry.

The machine emits virtually no nitrogen oxide and will save around 80,420kg of CO2 a year, Bam said.

It also saves around 150 litres of diesel a day. Operatives can fill the hydrogen tank in around 15 minutes.

Energy-system supplier Koninklijke van Twist advised on the conversion.

Bam said that because it doesn’t use a fuel cell, the paver can run on hydrogen of any quality.
