Atkins wins transport design contract in Georgia, US

28 May 2013

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) in the US has awarded Atkins a statewide consultancy contract to enhance its traffic signalling and intelligent transportation systems (ITS).

Atkins, which has developed ITS solutions for other US states, will also design regional transportation control centres and develop project specifications to support traffic operations.

The company already operates GDOT’s Transportation Management Centre where a 50-strong team monitors traffic, manages incident response and provides accurate roadway information to the public.

Atkins to manage Georgia’s regional traffic operations program

"We’ve assembled a highly qualified, comprehensive team of professionals with local understanding and nationally recognised expertise," said Atkins’ ITS practice manager, John Hibbard.

"GDOT requires an on-call consultant team made up of experienced professionals who provide innovative solutions. We have that."

Atkins also provides engineering support for Georgia’s Regional Traffic Operations Program by monitoring, managing and maintaining traffic signals – starting in the metro Atlanta area.

Atlanta contains over half of Georgia’s traffic signals and three-quarters of all traffic congestion.
