Atkins designs beach hotel in the ‘Chinese Riviera’

Atkins is drawing up plans for a beach-side, five-star hotel and residential complex in the tropical city of Sanya on Hainan Island, one of China’s southernmost areas.

The project is for a new tourist destination on an undeveloped part of the South China Sea coast.

Nearby, Asia’s largest duty-free shopping centre is under construction.

"Open views, rich landscape and privacy are key drivers to this masterplan strategy," said Tian Hong, Atkins’ associate director in China, adding, "Delightful tropical life is celebrated inside and out."

Atkins’ scope of work consists of concept design development, schematic design and landscaping.

The complex has a total gross floor area of 97,000 sq m and 38,000 sq m Autographic Collection hotel has 300 rooms and supporting amenities includes a ballroom, a Chinese restaurant, a Western restaurant and spa facilities.

The location at Haitang Bay, one of five major bays in Sanya, has been dubbed the new "Chinese Riviera".
