UK consulting engineer Arup has appointed TC Chew as its new managing director for the Asia Pacific region, where it aims to grow its headcount from 6,400 to 10,000 by 2030.
The company sees the region as one of the world’s fastest-growing, accounting for 39% of global GDP with growth forecast to continue for the next 20 years.
Chew joined Arup in 2018 and was formerly the firm’s global rail business leader. He will relocate to Singapore for the new role.
He noted “unprecedented demand” in the region for digital services, green energy technologies, and urbanisation, and said Arup could offer “borderless collaboration” among its 28 offices there.

Other personnel changes
In other personnel changes for the region, Arup’s current global chief operations officer Paul Coughlan will relocate to Singapore to take up the same role for Asia Pacific.
Kate West becomes chief officer for business and markets, Michael McGowan will lead on transport, Yoong Heng Tan on energy and water, and Anthony Chiu on property, science and industry.
The new region leadership structure comes into effect from 1 April 2025.
The firm opened its first Asia Pacific office in Sydney in the 1960s to design the Sydney Opera House. Other major Arup projects have included the Kai Tak Sports Park in Hong Kong, the Macau Bridge, and the Merdeka 118 building in Malaysia.
