Contractors will finish Cambodia’s New Siem Reap–Angkor International Airport next month and it will be officially opened in October, the Khmer Times reports.
Zou Yuhui, chairman of Yunnan Air Investment Cambodia Airport Management (YACA), which is financing the scheme, advised Tekreth Samrach, secretary of state at Cambodia’s Council of Ministers, of the completion schedule last Thursday.
YACA, a subsidiary of Chinese conglomerate Yunnan Investment Holding Group, has undertaken to market the new airport to Chinese cities and provinces. Already, some 30 local governments have established relations with Siem Reap province.
The $880m airport in the north of the country is around 40km from the Angkor Wat temple complex itself.
It will replace the existing Siem Reap airport, which is the second busiest in Cambodia after Phnom Penh International.
Angkor Wat is the largest religious structure in the world, attracting around 2.6 million visitors a year.
The 700ha project broke ground in March 2020 and is being built in three phases. The $380m first phase will be able to handle up to 7 million passengers a year.
According to the update, work is now 92% complete and flight validation will begin in the middle of next month.
