Aecom will act as lead designer for the Phase 2 final design of the $3.57bn East San Fernando Valley Light Rail Transit system.

It’s part of the San Fernando Transit Constructors joint venture building a 6.7-mile light rail system with 11 stations for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

Scheduled to open in 2031, the light railway will run along the busy Van Nuys Boulevard, serving residents of Van Nuys, Panorama City, Arleta and Pacoima, many of whom are transit dependent.

Aecom said all project elements would be designed using building information modelling for better efficiency.

It said the system would need to integrate with regional transit services, including Metrolink, Amtrak, Metro G Line and Metro B Line.

The scope of its work includes comprehensive street improvements and a new, 22-acre maintenance and storage facility.

The joint venture includes Skanska and heavy civils contractor Stacy and Witbeck.
