Eight thousand people have been left homeless in Manila after a major fire ripped through a densely packed slum area on Sunday, CNN reports.

Flames engulfed stilt homes in the Isla Puting Bato shanty town in the Tondo district of the Philippines’ capital between 8am and 4pm yesterday.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire. CNN comments that fires in Manila’s slums are often ignited by faulty wiring or gas canisters.

The Manila Fire District said around 1,000 houses were destroyed.

No fatalities have been reported yet.

Tondo is Manila’s largest slum, home to around 654,000 people.
