Otis China is to build an elevator test tower in Shanghai as part of a global research and development facility.
The 270m tall structure is expected to be the tallest above-ground test tower in the world upon completion.
Otis is a subsidiary of United Technologies, an American aircraft manufacturer.
The new facility will support the development of technologies aiming to deliver higher "efficiency and smaller footprints, as well as industry-leading safety, comfort and convenience for passengers".
The tower design uses a flexible configuration that can easily adapt to test components and systems as they evolve.
Otis has systems in place in the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the world’s tallest building, the CN Tower in Toronto, the highest in North America, and the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
The firm has approximately 2 million elevators and escalators in more than 200 countries and territories.
Earlier this week in Shanghai, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation said it had achieved the fastest elevator speed ever recorded.
The facilities are scheduled to be operational by the end of 2018.
