Thirteen workers were still missing Thursday morning (5 December) after what’s being described as a ground collapse at a high-speed rail construction site in Shenzhen, southeastern China.

Around 200 local fire and rescue workers were at the site on Thursday in Shenzhen’s Bao’an District, where crews were working on the fifth section of the inter-city Shenzhen-Jiangmen Railway.

Nearby residents were evacuated after the collapse, which happened at around 11pm Wednesday night, the South China Morning Post reports.

An investigation into the cause of the collapse has begun.

The 116km-long Shenzhen-Jiangmen Railway will connect the tech hub of Shenzhen to Jiangmen, a city of some 4.8 million, across the Pearl River Estuary.

Work on a 13.7km tunnel under the estuary – set to be China’s deepest underwater tunnel – began in July 2020, with tunnel boring completed in August this year.
