Work has begun on the Solar Carve Tower in New York, designed by Jeanne Gang’s Studio Gang practice.
The 167,000 square foot office building will be located between Manhattan’s High Line Park and the Hudson River.
The project is described by the architect as being "sculpted by the angles of the sun", and "exploring how shaping a building in response to solar access and other site-specific criteria can expand its architectural potential".
Solar carving, developed by Studio Gang’s tall building research unit, involves using incident angles of sunlight to "sculpt" a building’s form.
The building takes its form from the "geometric relationships between the building’s allowable envelope and the sun’s path, as well as the views between the park and the Hudson".
The architect says the building is designed to achieve LEED Gold status, and will offer green public space and river views.
It will also contain a 10,000 square foot rooftop terrace and 8,000 square feet of outdoor space. It is expected to open in 2019.
