Egypt’s New Administrative Capital, a city from scratch in the desert east of Cairo, will be getting "vertical forest" buildings from the Italian architect Stefano Boeri following a deal signed with Egyptian real estate firm Misr Italia Properties.
Stefano Boeri Architetti Company agreed to build three vertical forest buildings, which have balconies festooned with trees and plants, as part of Misr Italia’s 10,000-acre, IL Bosco project in the new capital, Egyptian media report. Â
Misr Italia’s deputy chairman Mohammed Khaled al-Assal said on 2 August the agreement involves a hotel and two residential buildings containing 300 units.
Construction will start in June 2020, but units would go on sale in December this year.
Misr Italia’s investment in the green buildings will be approximately €163m, or E£3bn, reports said.
According to news site Ansamed.info, Stefano Boeri said "there are many ways to make the city green, this vertical forest is a less expensive and faster way of dealing with climate change. The objective of the vertical forest is to limit pollution. These are small efforts but they are very important. And making people plant trees is the best way to involve them".Â
Boeri said a hotel chain would manage the three buildings.
His verital forest buildings have been built or planned in Milan, Utrecht, Villiers sur Marne near Paris, and Eindhoven, where the building is intended for social housing, and Guizhou Province, China.
If the Egyptian plan goes ahead it will be the concept’s first appearance in the Middle East.
