Santiago Calatrava wins competition to design Dubai observation tower

Spanish engineer and architect Santiago Calatrava has won an international design competition for a landmark observation tower in Dubai Creek Harbour.

Calatrava will work with Emaar Properties and Dubai Holding to develop the design, which was one of six submitted.

The tower’s form is inspired by Islamic architecture and fuses modern, sustainable design with the culture and heritage of the UAE.

Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai and the judge of the competition, said: "This architectural wonder will be as great as the Burj Khalifa and the Eiffel Tower."

Calatrava said: "We feel extremely thankful and honoured to have been selected for such an important project.

"Dubai is where innovative and revolutionary architecture is making incredible strides. In our proposed design, we have united local traditional architecture with that of the 21st century."

Calatrava recently designed the World Trade Centre’s $3.8bn transportation hub in New York.
