New York tower dwellers to swim 91m in the air

Construction has begun on two curved towers in New York that will be connected with a skybridge containing a 23-metre-long swimming pool.

Reminiscent of the London "Sky Pool" the American Copper Buildings, formerly known as 626 First Avenue, will be located on the east side of Manhattan.

The skybridge connects the 27th and 29th floors of the two structures and is 91m above ground. As well as a pool it will contain a hot tub, bar and lounge area.

Forty-one and 48 storeys in height, the towers will have 800 residential units between them, with 20% described as affordable.

Copper and glass cladding on the towers will take on a green hue over time.

New York studio SHoP Architects has designed the towers’ exterior, as well as the interiors for all 800 units and the furnishing and finishes for the building’s public spaces.

The 83,600-sq-m development will offer views of the East River, Empire State Building and Manhattan skyline.

SHoP worked with construction manager JDS Development Group and landscape firm Scape on the project.

It is due to be completed next year, with apartments going on sale this Autumn.
