Gunmen kidnap Lebanese road engineer in northern Nigeria

A Lebanese engineer working on a road construction site in Kano, northern Nigeria was abducted by unidentified gunmen yesterday in an attack that left one person dead and another injured.

Four gunmen stormed the site at about 7:40 am local time, seizing the engineer who was supervising work, reports newspaper Vanguard, citing AFP.

Police said the engineer had no assigned security.

They have opened an investigation to identify the gunmen and rescue the victim.

Witnesses said a Nigerian construction worker was killed and another injured when they tried to stop the gunmen entering the site.

A kidnapping trend, long present in Nigeria’s oil-rich southern delta region, has been on the rise in the north in recent years, Vanguard noted.

In April last year gunmen kidnapped a German construction engineer in Kano after killing his police escort. Police blamed armed robbers.

Vanguard notes the attacks in the northwest have been a challenge to recently re-elected President Muhammadu Buhari, who enjoys support in the region.
