Foster + Partners’ spectacular “floating” office breaks ground in Copenhagen

A groundbreaking ceremony has taken place in Copenhagen for Foster + Partners’ headquarters for Ferring Pharmaceuticals.

The 39,000 square metre office is located on the urban fringe of the city in Kastrup, near the international airport, where it is possible to see the Swedish city of Malmö, where Ferring was founded.

The structure is made up of a triangular glass building that appears to float above a stone plinth, which also acts as its first line of defence against floods.

Six stacked floors and roof canopy cantilever out to further capture the surrounding views and create self-shaded spaces on each floor.

Offices and laboratories are situated on the edges of the building to take advantage of the views and natural light, whereas more collaborative meeting spaces are located towards the centre.

At the heart of the structure is an atrium comprising an entrance lobby, cafe and break-out space, as well as catered conference facilities and a space for social events.

Grant Brooker, who led the design of the building said: "We wanted to create a very strong base that directly connects to and celebrates this unique waterside location and lifts the building above that level – so that there are uninterrupted views from the ground floor to the strait and the surrounding harbour.

"It was vital that the building reflected the personality of the organisation and that it would create a collaborative and flexible working environment to carry them through the next century."

The project is due to be completed in 2019.
