Austrian firm wins role on Munich Airport rail project

Austrian construction firm Porr has been awarded a €110m contract for a 1.8km rail tunnel  expansion for Munich Airport by Flughafen München GmbH, the airport operator.

The tunnel will be built using the cut-and-cover technique.

There is a tight nine month construction window for 250m of the tunnel, which will be built underneath the airfield’s satellite terminal.

Porr’s project will connect the airport’s existing line with the new 30km Erdinger Ringschluss development, a project linking Freising and Erding, both north of the city, to Munich Airport.

Karl-Heinz Strauss, Porr chief executive, said: "Our subsidiary in Germany, Stump Spezialtiefbau, will play a key role in executing the project.

"Porr made an impression in the tender phase with its customised solutions, thereby achieving significant savings compared to the original construction works."

Construction on the project will begin this month and is due to be completed in 2021.
