Engineer and architect-of-record Aurecon has announced that it will collaborate with Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava on a supertall observation tower in Dubai Creek Harbour.
The project, to be known as "the Tower" will be supported using a net of steel cables reaching from the top of the building to the bottom. The aim is to replicate the "delicate ribbing of lily leaves."
Ten observation decks will be placed on an oval "flower bud" at the top of the structure.
It’s unknown exactly how large the supertall building will be.
Andy Davids, Aurecon’s tall buildings leader, said: "One of the secrets with courageous projects is not to use new techniques or materials, but to stick with what you know.
"At the same time, we must work to maximise the potential of those materials and techniques.
"What’s different in The Tower is that we’ll be pushing the use of these techniques beyond current norms to create something unparalleled, and for us that’s very exciting."
The project is due to be completed over the next four years.
Mohamed Alabbar, the chairman of Emaar, which is developing the scheme, said: "The Tower in Dubai Creek Harbour will be a shining beacon of hope for the world, celebrating diversity and human achievements. The iconic landmark will further amplify the country’s ambition and futuristic vision."
Dubai Creek Harbour is also an Emaar development.
It was announced that Calatrava would spearhead the project in February this year.
